ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The territory has seen no major destruction as a result of hurricanes or tropical storms that have passed so far for the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

The latest storm to affect the VI was Tropical Storm Karen, which hit on Tuesday, September 24, 2019.

The result was slight flooding in low lying areas, fallen rocks on roadways and power outages in some areas.

General Manager of the BVIEC, Mr Leroy A. E. Abraham had told our newsroom on Wednesday, September 25, 2019, that the distribution network only sustained minor damages as a result of the storm.

Systems up & running

According to the General Manager via invited comments today Friday, September 27, 2019, everything is now back to normal, as all problems were speedily repaired.

'The problems experienced are typical for any electric utility following inclement weather such as what we experienced with the passage of TS Karen,' he told Virgin Islands News Online (VINO).

As a result of the storm, only some isolated customers across the territory were affected during its passage, the GM told our newsroom.

'Recognising that hurricane season is an annual occurrence and the BVI is located in the hurricane belt; BVIEC is always prepared as part of our annual business plan!' Mr Abraham assured, noting that that the utility company is ready for any adverse weather disturbance that can become a threat to the territory.

Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), throughout his updates, had reiterated for residents and the territory to 'Get Ready and Stay Ready.'

'Please continue to be the vigilant citizens that you have shown yourselves to be so far this season. We are in the peak of what forecasters predicted from early would be an active Atlantic Hurricane Season,' Premier Fahie said in a Wednesday, September 25, 2019 statement.

    Back to normal and our streets are dangerously dark???? You got to be crazy!! These roads are crime infested and a danger to motorist at night. Light up the streets and these neighborhoods where these thugs on motorcycles hang out and then you can say that we are back to normal. Until then, be quiet!!
